Seattle Central Library

An angular and crystalline presence on the downtown skyline, this 11-level building occupies an entire city block and features a 275-seat auditorium and ample open spaces for meeting, studying, or reading.  The architecturally expressive LEED Silver facility’s innovative design incorporates a “Book Spiral” connecting visitors to various collections and library services spread throughout five platforms that cantilever as much as 52 ft to create a visually “floating” effect. Gravity loads are carried by multi-story-deep perimeter platform trusses supported by sloping columns that maximize counterbalancing opportunities. The building’s unique diamond-shaped steel grid resists wind and earthquake loads, interconnects the platform trusses, supports the curtain wall, and serves as an impressive interior. MKA’s full-block civil site design provides storm drain control, off-site frontage improvements for four adjacent street right-of-ways, erosion and sediment control, and an irrigation system utilizing rainwater collected on-site.
