San Diego (SAN) Terminal 2 West Expansion Seismic Concept Design and Peer Review

MKA provided concept design for San Diego International Airport's (SAN's) expansion, adding 10 new gates, a baggage claim area, and a central concessions food court, followed by oversight and peer review of the final structural design.  After analysis of an existing seismic solution, MKA proposed a design that eliminated 11,740 ft of costly building joints, 500 tons of structural steel, and several new pile caps, thereby reducing the structural construction cost by over five percent.  The enhanced seismic solution also reduced columns to improve passenger flow and provide tremendous views and spatial flexibility. The project achieved LEED Platinum Certification, marking the world's first airport to achieve this certification level.
