UW Medicine Lake Union, Phase 1
Breathing new life into the four-story Brotman Building constructed in 1962, this renovation project involved a change-of-use upgrade to convert former office space into modern laboratories. MKA’s seismic retrofit utilized concrete shear walls and steel-and-concrete drag struts to augment the existing structure and steel posts to reduce floor vibrations sixfold—from 12,000 to 2,000 micro-inches per second. This project’s success was a catalyst for further development of the UW Medicine Lake Union campus. MKA’s civil team also provided support of on-site modifications required for land use compliance and documentation of off-site utility connections. UW Medicine Lake Union, Phase 1
