Wanapum Heritage Center

Located adjacent to the Columbia River, this two-level heritage center provides a home for the living culture of the Wanapum Native American tribe and archival storage for artifact collections. The museum, who's design compliments the landscape and echos traditional tribal designs, also includes recording studios for capturing oral history, as well as meeting, cooking, and gathering spaces. The structural design utilizes concrete on steel deck, exterior bearing shear walls, and AESS steel moment frames. The 80-ft long-span roof features exposed open-web steel trusses and glulam timber framing. Stormwater facilities on the zero-discharge site include above-grade systems for water quality treatment of vehicular surfaces and below-grade infiltration facilities. A rain event surface water feature conveys roof stormwater runoff. By using distributed and decentralized stormwater management approaches, MKA reduced the quantities of conventional earthwork and storm drainage systems for the site, while site facilities and utilities are designed and located to minimize disruption of existing local habitat.
